After today’s Soup Lunch (Friday 6th February), we all sat spellbound as we learned about two things.
1) Presbytery of Europe soon to be renamed International Presbytery and
2) Out of Africa
Rev Douglas McRoberts enthralled us with the work being done in Malta to help those who arrive as refugees from many parts of Africa and, as he was quick to point out, not only Africa but now the Middle East. Young men came first as economic migrants looking for a better future for themselves but now they are finding it is families fleeing from war, violence and persecution, sometimes even children are sent alone for a better life in Europe.
What began as a helping hand with food and clothing has become a wider and more far reaching enterprise. English language classes and microloans being two of the ways people are being aided as well as housing, food and clothing.
Thanks to the Guild in Scotland taking this initiative on as one of their three year projects much good work has been able to be carried out by the St Andrews congregation in Valetta due to the generosity of people in Scotland and other countries.
